General facts and benefits of silver

For thousands of years, silver has been used by civilizations around the world as a healing and antibacterial agent. Its medicinal, preservative and restorative powers date back to the ancient Greek and Roman Empires. Long before the development of modern pharmaceuticals, silver was used as a germicide and antibiotic.

Consider these interesting facts:

The Greeks used silver vessels to keep water and other liquids fresh. The writings of the Greek philosopher and historian Herodotus date the use of silver to before the birth of Christ.

The use of silver is mentioned in ancient Egyptian writings.

Before the advent of modern germicides and antibiotics, it was known that harmful pathogens could not survive in the presence of silver. Consequently, silver was used in tableware, drinking vessels and eating utensils. The rich in particular, even in the Roman Empire, stored and ate their food from silver vessels to prevent the growth of bacteria.

Chinese emperors and their courts ate with silver chopsticks.

The Druids left evidence of their use of silver.

Settlers in the Australian outback hang silver cutlery in their water tanks to delay spoilage.

Pioneers wandering the American West found that silver or copper coins in their drinking water barrels protected the water from bacteria, algae, etc.

Silver dollars were added to milk in America to keep it fresh.

Silver leaf was used to combat infections in wounds sustained by troops during World War I.

Before the introduction of antibiotics, colloidal silver was widely used in hospitals and has been known as a bactericide for at least 1200 years.

In the early 1800s, doctors used silver sutures in surgical wounds with very successful results.

In Ayurvedic medicine, silver is used in small quantities as a tonic, elixir or rejuvenator for patients weakened by age or illness.

Newly discovered silver

It wasn't until the late 19th century that Western scientists rediscovered what had been known for thousands of years - that silver is a powerful germ fighter. Then medicinal silver compounds were developed and silver became commonly used as medicine. At the beginning of the 20th century, the use of silver as an antibacterial substance was widespread. By 1940, there were approximately four dozen different silver compounds on the market that were used to treat every known infectious disease. These were available in oral, injectable and topical forms.

Although there was some negative publicity regarding medicinal silver in the early 1900s (due to overuse of certain types of protein-bound silver compounds that caused a discoloration of the skin called argyria, and due to an ingestion of improperly manufactured and unstable Silver) reputable medical reports showed that a properly prepared colloidal dispersion of silver was completely suitable without any adverse side effects. T. H. Anderson Wells reported in the Lancet (February 16, 1918) that a preparation of colloidal silver was used "intravenously... without irritation of the kidneys and without pigmentation of the skin."
